Bakestock

Duration
September 2022 to December 2022
Problem
Pastry Chefs have to spend an ample amount of time to manage the inventory preventing them from pursuing their passion.
Bakestock is an ingredient inventory app designed for pastry chefs. I came up with this design as a part of a Google-certified Bootcamp.

This app will help bakers maintain an auto updated ingredient inventory for their bakeries.
Goal
Pastry chefs should be able to go on with their baking schedule everyday without any obstacles while also achieving a well maintained inventory system.
My Roles
Wireframes
I drafted multiple initial digital wireframe screen options on paper to find the most suitable one, catering to the user’s pain point. I prioritized a quick and organised process to help users manage their bakery ingredient inventory. Important elements include Navigation, Search Bar, Categories Tab, Add Ingredient Tab, and Essential Ingredient Tab

After a few rounds of iterating, based on how the users (participants) found the working of the low fidelity prototype, the digital wireframes began looking slightly different from the paper wireframes.
High Fidelity Prototype
The final high-fidelity prototype presented cleaner user flows for updating the shopping list. It also met user needs for quick auto updation of all ingredients expiry dates.

Design System
I came up with a themed sticker sheet of elements used while designing the app. It consists of Typography, Colour Schemes, Buttons, Cards and Icons

Responsive Web
Bakestock has been designed for 3 types of iOS devices.

User Research Methods
I conducted Interviews and created Empathy Maps to understand the users I’m designing for and their needs. A primary user group identified through research was bakery owners who preferred spending more hours on baking. Mentioned below are the main Pain Points identified through research.
1. Time
Bakers are too busy to spend time managing baking as well as inventory
2. Accessibility
Platforms for viewing ingredient stock are not equipped with assistive technologies
3. Information Architecture
Text buried apps are often difficult to read and navigate and cause confusion to users
I derived a Problem Statement with the help of a Persona representing various bakers.

Rohan is a busy Pastry Chef who needs a faster and organised way to maintain and update his ingredient inventory at his bakery because manually updating the inventory is time consuming and isn’t a good use of his time.

Accessibility Considerations
After conducting an Unmoderated Usability Study to test the app. I realised that some users required a more intuitive approach towards the design, which I had not accounted for. This taught me the importance of accessible design.
1. Gestures
I added gestures to provide an intuitive experience. By clicking on the faded background, a user can go back to the previous screen. The user can also choose the conventional "BackArrow" to go to the previous screen.
2. Color Palette
The colours chosen for the screens are comfortable to users' eyes while also providing a warm/inviting theme. The orange shade improves the attention span of a user.
3. Icons & Imagery
The icons and images used in the app are chosen appropriately so as to help users identify he function instantly. The icons used are universally identified and hence easy to understand.
